SAVE CITY PLACE – MAKE IT WOW! Petition
NO COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
There has never been Community Engagement and Consultation regarding the future of City Place. Cairns Regional Council has refused to creat a forum for City Place on its Yoursay website.
88 inner city businesses have signed a petition saying they they were not consulted and they do not agree to City Place being opened up to traffic.
Neither Council nor Qld Transport (DTMR) has ever asked to consult with the Save City Place - Make It WOW! campaign even though we have many supporters, many ideas and probably, amongst us, more knowledge of City Place than they do!
NOTHING TO DO WITH IMPROVING PUBLIC TRANSPORT
We are told that we need to open City Place to traffic to improve public transport. Nonsense! Bus stops will be reduced in the CBD from 9 to 2. People - including elderly, young parents with toddlers and people with disabilities who depend on public transort will have to walk a lot further to catch a bus.
At present people can get off and catch a bus along Abbott St, Spence St, part of Lake St and McLeod St. In the new plan people would only be able to get on and off at Woolworths on Lake St - one location!
Too bad for people coming out of Coles and BiLo with their groceries at the northern end of Cairns Central.
This is not about improving public transport. It is about bringing more cars into the CBD!
COUNCIL HAS DELIBERATELY DEGRADED CITY PLACE
Over the last 10 years Council has deliberately degraded City Place.
They took away the grassy areas to sit on and they took away the shade trees. They replaced the shade trees with leopard trees which every landscape architect knows will not provide shade.
They took away the fountain. They replaced convivial seating with metal seating too hot to sit on.
In 2010 Council took away the budget for performances in City Place and redirected all entertainment to the Esplanade.
Hides Hotel paid for and donated a Christmas Tree for City Place. In 2010 Council took it away from City Place and relocated to the Esplanade without even asking Hides Hotel. They are not happy about it.
VISION FOR CITY PLACE
City Place is the focal point of the city of Cairns. It has a heritage listed building on each corner including Cairns Museum and Hides Hotel. It has a huge beautiful fig tree.
Bring back the giant shade trees! (eg gimuy fig trees). Bring back the fountain but this time make it a spectacular one. Have some public tables with sunshades and free fast wifi. Have a small tourist information kiosk with a police beat desk.
Have a stall selling tropical fruit for people on the go, and colourful tropical flowers (heliconias, bird of paradise etc) for the office.
Have a wooden walkway and small viewing platform around the giant fig just like they have done at the Trinity Boardwalk near Wharf 2.
Maybe a colourful mosaic set in the pavers which could be viewed from this little platform, as well as from a restaurant on the veranda of Hides Hotel and a cafe on the veranda of Cairns Museum? This mosaic could depict local Aboriginal Water Stories.
They have had some great creative lanterns in City Place over Xmas. Just leave them there permanently.
Grow trees around the fountain (eg on the southern side). Grow food plants for Ulysses and Birdwing butterflies (eg aristolochia) and breed butterflies in City Place! And some of those tropical flowers and wild native FNQ orchids and epiphytes.
Have interpretation panels that tell about the Gimuy Wallabarra clan of the Yidinji tribe who lived in the area originally; about the Lagoon that went from Rockmans down to Orchid Plaza called Gimuy Lagoon, and the gimuy fig trees that grew around the lagoon. The lagoon is still there under the ground, and water still flows from it, down Shields St, under the Esplanade Lagoon and out to sea. The Gimuy Warrabarra people made shields from the buttress roots of these giumy fig trees but they didn't kill the trees to do it. "Gimuy" was the original name for Cairns.
Revamp the performance stage so there is more back to it (to avoid traffic noise from behind and to project sound better, but not a closed shell). Extend the roof to give more shelter from the sun and rain. Modify the 'mushroom" image.
If we can do such as fantasic design at Muddies, the Esplanade Lagoon, and at the Trinity Boardwalk near Wharf 2, then we can even use the same architects to revamp City Place!
The ideas above come from a reservoir of ideas from people. but we are always interested in hearing of your ideas and views. post them on the site or send them to SaveCityPlace@gmail.com.
