14 years ago I embarked on solo adventure that changed my life.
I flew into London with absolutely no idea what I was doing, or where I was going. I had my passport and was on a plane and that was all that mattered. I soon discovered the amazing people, attractions and scenery that the United Kingdom has to offer. After 6 weeks of exploring, I quite spontaneously jumped on a boat that was headed for Holyhead in Dublin. I instantly fell in love with the warmth, humour, generosity and of course the "craic" of the Irish. So much so, that I stayed there for 2 years. Dublin was my gateway to gallivant throughout Europe so I made the most of it. I spent 5 weeks on a Contiki Tour of Europe, and from Dublin I was able to take advantage at the ease of getting to such countries as Turkey, Czech Republic and Spain.
When I returned to Australia, I decided I wanted to be a travel agent. I wanted everyone to see and experience the things that I had. I had developed an insatiable appetite for adventure and I wanted more! The world is so much bigger than our own backyard. Whilst I have travelled, worked and studied around much of Australia, and there is no doubt we live in an amazing country, to be able engage with other cultures on a very personal level, and to be able to learn, understand and enjoy the things that are important to them and what makes them so unique, is something that you cannot learn from a book or from the internet or the television. It is something only real life experiences can teach you.
In the last 13 years that I have worked as a travel agent, I have been fortunate to have been able to swank it up 5 star in some of South Africa's magnificent Game Parks, and I have also roughed it on the back roads of Botswana in a tent. I have flown quite comfortably in Economy Class, and also enjoyed the sophistication of Business Class travel. I have been up close and personal with baby cheetah cubs in Botswana, walked with the lions in Zambia, experienced the excitement and anticipation of hoping to see the elusive Leopard in South Africa, and stood with a pounding heart as enormous giraffes and wild warthog walked right in front of me in Kenya and Tanzania. I have indulged in delicious tapas in Malaga, and completely exhausted myself walking around Ayers Rock. I have been awe-struck at the beauty of the constellation of our stars, while watching them on a yacht in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and I have shopped until I have literally dropped in Las Vegas.
Some of my journeys such as to Mauritius and the Cook Islands have been for the purpose of work. Others, such as Vietnam and Far North Queensland have been purely for pleasure. Either way, all of these experiences have enriched my life. So to be able to share my stories with the hope of inspiring others to take the plunge and see what mind-boggling experiences are awaiting them, or to head off to your next business conference, I have lots of genuine first hand experience and advice that I can share with you.
